MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Kenyan troops launched a pre-dawn attack on the Somali port city of Kismayu on Friday in an assault to drive the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group from its last major stronghold.
Fighting and shelling was taking place on the city's beaches after a land and amphibious assault, city residents and rebels said.
The loss of the southern port would deal a huge blow to al Shabaab as it is a lucrative source of revenue and a centre for operations over areas it has controlled in south-central Somalia since 2007.
The group, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.
While Kismayu's recapture would go a long way towards stabilizing Somalia, which has lacked effective central government for the past 20 years, it may embolden the militants to resort to more guerrilla-style attacks.
Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said Kenyan soldiers and Somali government troops had advanced on Kismayu from the north, south and from the sea and was now in control of parts of the city.
"We're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," Oguna told Reuters.
Oguna said there had been little resistance while Al Shabaab said it was still in Kismayu, the country's second biggest city.
Residents reported fighting near the beach earlier on Friday, about 4 km (2.5 miles) outside the city, as military helicopters hovered overhead.
"We saw seven ships early in the morning and now their firing looks like lightning and thunder. Al Shabaab have gone towards the beach. The ships poured many AU troops on the beach," Ismail Suglow told Reuters.
Locals said businesses were closed and many streets were deserted. Some masked men looked on from windows and balconies.
"We can hear deafening shells and the town looks dead. We don't know where to go, the jets are now flying over," said Rukia Jelle, who was watching the scene outside her home with her five children.
KISMAYU "NOT A PIECE OF CAKE"
The Kenyan military spokesman predicted an easy takeover.
"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance, I don't see anything major happening," he said.
Al Shabaab, which was driven out of the capital Mogadishu last August and is fighting African Union forces in other parts of the country, said it would not give up Kismayu easily.
"Going into Kismayu is not a piece of cake. We are still fighting them on the beach where they landed," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday.
"For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere."
Abdirashid Hashi, an analyst with the International Crisis Group said the loss of Kisamyu would be a "huge psychological blow" and a "significant loss" for the militants.
"The die-hard members will continue with their destabilization strategy of targeted killings, suicide bombings and IEDs (roadside bombs)," Hashi told Reuters.
"The low-level footsoldiers will just see them as a losing proposition," he said.
Hashi also said the loss of funding from local taxes would hurt them less as the group morphed into a more fluid guerrilla force. The rebels would have less need for finances to run urban areas and pay salaries, and would focus more on acquiring immediate supplies.
Al Shabaab's radio station, Radio Andalus, was still airing live in Kismayu, urging residents to take their guns and join the 'jihad', Suglow said.
A woman named Halima said some residents who support the militants had joined them with guns at the frontline.
Hashi said the fighters, who have been in Kismayu for the last five years, would have prepared for an assault they knew was coming after African troops seized Mogadishu, Afmadow, Baidoa, Beledweyne, and Marka.
"The area around Kismayu is all forest and jungle and they knew this would come. I am sure they have some contingency plans and have sent supplies outside the city," he said.
Kenya sent its troops into Somalia last October after the rebels were blamed for a series of raids on Kenyan soil targeting its security forces as well as Western tourists.
On Thursday, residents said planes had dropped leaflets on Kismayu warning civilians to evacuate within 24 hours.
The United Nations refugee agency said there had been a spike in residents fleeing the city on Thursday but no reports of large numbers fleeing on Friday, adding that there had been fighting close to both the main roads leading out of the city.
It said more than 13,000 people had fled Kismayu since the beginning of September after Kenyan forces began targeting al Shabaab's positions in the city.

An article on writing instruction in The Atlantic is among the must-reads of the week. In a nutshell, the piece reports that a lousy high school on Staten Island has found success improving students? writing by actually teaching writing?that is, the fundamentals of sentence construction, the use of coordinating conjunctions to identify logical connections, and the coherent organization of paragraphs.
As Alan Jacobs observes across the page, this should come as little surprise to people who were educated before the 1960s. But it was a shock to the teachers at New Dorp High School, who initially believed that their students were too dumb to write well. Many now speak enthusiastically of the program. There?s actually fodder here for both sides of the recent strike in Chicago. On the one hand, teachers had to be placed under considerable pressure to implement reforms they distrusted. On the other hand, those reforms were not based on high stakes testing.
As an occasional teacher of expository writing at the college level, I am delighted by the favorable attention paid here to an unglamorous job. Although great writing can?t be taught, competent writing can. And in my experience, most students are eager to learn.
But there?s an obstacle to learning to write that the Atlantic piece doesn?t bring up: few students have much experience as readers of expository texts. English classes generally emphasize fiction and drama (the New Dorp students are reading Death of a Salesman). Social studies classes rely on insipid textbooks. Asking students who have only these models to develop analytic arguments is something like asking rugby players to take up American football. They could be taught the rules. But they?d have trouble mastering a game they?d never seen played.
In addition to rigorous instruction then, students need examples of effective prose. To get them, they should be required to read good narrative history, traditional literary criticism, and, at least in my dreams, great political speeches.
What to assign? I?m curious to know what readers think. If you could require high school students to read just one text, what would it be? Think speeches, essays, or chapters of books. The History of the?Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is probably too much to ask.

You can brew your own beer on the stove, in a keg, or even inside a pumpkin, but those all look boring next to The Wobbly Boot Pico Brewery, the most sophisticated home-brewing system you'll ever see.
Built by Ben_B, an engineer at National Instruments, the brewery sits on a steel frame with two incredibly shiny kegs. There's an LCD touch-panel PC, and Ben even made his own app to make it fully automated.
The app lets him save recipes and also monitors the temperature of the beer. It keeps track of how long it's been brewing, and even calculates the alcohol percentage!
You can find detailed information on how the Wobbly Boot Pico Brewery was made over on Ben's blog.
Want to brew your own beer, but don't have a fancy machine like this? We've got tons of tutorials to get you on the right track.

Computer literacy is a must for children in today?s age, here is some information about computer classes for kids?
Although it has been a really long time since the computer was developed, the computer has become an object of great importance to day, be it any workplace and any profession. The uses and applications of computers are vast and un-ending. Computer literacy has become a pre-requisite while appearing for almost every odd interview. Since it is a known fact that today?s children will grow up to become responsible adults of tomorrow, they must be introduced to the basic technology that currently rules the world. This article will provide you with all the essential information you need to know before you enroll your child for computer classes.
What are the various types of computer classes?
Many schools and colleges offer computer classes for children. These classes are safe and reliable since they are designed specially for the children considering their ages and the distinct learning and grasping speeds. In case you fail to find such a computer class for your kids, there exist several virtual classes that offer computer lessons over the net. Also there exist several computer-teaching software that is sold in the market, in case you fail to find a suitable virtual classroom as well.
What is the suitable age for children to enroll them for a computer class?
Your child is ready to learn basic computer skills when he/ she is ready for the preschool. However the computer skills that would be taught to a 4 year old will be different than the elder kids. In case your child has an inclination for a career in computers, make sure you enroll him for the advanced level computer classes as well. This will give him an introduction to the syllabus that he will be taught in further professional courses.
What are the things that I should look for while selecting a computer class for my child?
Most importantly you need to check whether the class that you are registering for is a reliable one. Ask for an introductory session to give you a brief idea of the content that your child will be exposed to. Check whether the location of the classes seems convenient and safe for your child to visit regularly. Interact with the teachers/instructors and see whether they seem well prepared and pleasant. Ask what the teacher student ratio would be and whether your child would get personal attention. Check the number of computers in the class and make sure very child gets a personal computer while working in the class.
What if my child finds the computer classes too boring?
To avoid this problem, enroll your child in a computer class that has a good balance of education and entertainment. Monotonous theoretical knowledge can also sometimes make the children lose interest. Choose a class that offers plenty of hands on experience for the students.
What sort of things will my child learn in a computer class?
Depending on your child?s age, the computer classes usually start with basic computer skills like using the mouse, the keyboard, painting and drawing, simple pre-school games etc. Elder kids are then taught the functioning of the computer, the use of important software, and of course browsing the Internet. Advanced levels also offer various computer languages like C, C++ and knowledge of latest animation and graphics software.
What are the benefits of computer classes?
The first and most important benefit of having enrolled your child in a computer class is introducing him to technology so that he is comfortable with it. Computer skills, and proficiency at using the mouse and keyboard are known to enhance the hand-eye co-ordination of children. Having sound knowledge of basic computer software is nowadays a pre-requisite for any career, providing this knowledge to your child is like preparing him for the future.
In today?s competitive job market, having up-to-date technology skills is a must. Online training provides an easy, cost-effective means of acquiring proficiency in a variety of computing skills.

NEW YORK (AP) - Scientists have completed a major analysis of the genetics of breast cancer and find four major classes of the disease. They hope their work will lead to more effective treatments.
The new findings offer hints that one type of breast cancer might be vulnerable to drugs that already work against ovarian cancer.
The study appeared online Sunday in the journal Nature. It's the latest example of research into the biological details of tumors, rather than focusing on where cancer arises in the body.
The hope is that such research can reveal cancer's genetic weaknesses that someday can be targeted by drugs, even some already in use.

The price of single detached homes in Thailand fell in the second quarter of 2012, but prices for condominiums, townhomes and residential land are on the rise, which makes for a mixed report from the Bank of Thailand (BOT). The Real Estate Information Centre reports that housing transfers in greater Bangkok have been dropping since 2010 due to the expiration of tax incentives, yet the BOT is considering taking measures to avoid a property bubble, particularly in the market for condominiums. That bubble has yet to arrive, but increased lending and economic growth may make those measures necessary in the future. For more on this continue reading the following article from Global Property Guide.
The Thai price index for single detached houses dropped by 1.15% (-3.59% inflation-adjusted) during the year to end-Q2 2012, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country?s central bank.?
On a quarterly basis, it fell 1.81% (-3.03% inflation-adjusted) in Q2, the second consecutive quarterly decline.
However during the year to end-June 2012:
In the second quarter of 2012, total outstanding property credit rose by 11.7% to THB1.7 trillion (US$55 billion) compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Land, Ministry of Interior.
The country?s gross domestic product (GDP) growth was up a stronger-than-expected 4.2% from the same period last year, with recovery from last year?s devastating floods. Despite external uncertainty, the domestic economy is expected to grow by a robust 5.7%, according to the BOT.
In the third quarter of 2010, there was a sharp drop in housing transfers in Greater Bangkok, because of the expiry of property tax incentives in June, according to the Real Estate Information Centre (REIC). Transfers fell 42% from the previous quarter, with a large number of transfers rushed through before the tax incentives ended.
In the same quarter, developers launched more than 23,000 condominium units onto the market to release pent-up supplies, according to the Colliers International Thailand. The launches were mainly in the low to medium end market, with reduced unit sizes, compensating to some degree for increasing land prices throughout the city.
The take-up, however, has been low, with buyers are increasingly likely to shop around before making a decision, notes Colliers. In Bangkok, take-up rate in Q3 plunged by to 51% from 77% in Q2, and 67% in Q1.
Nevetherless new condominium units near mass-transit routes will see price spikes of at least 5% in 2011, accprding to the real estate development firm Supalai Plc, due to higher construction costs and land prices. Customers will have to accept price increases as land for new condominiums in areas close to mass transit is very scarce. On the other hand, stable prices are expected for low-rise units.
The average rental yield in Bangkok is now around 6.2% in May 2010, down from around 7.2% in 2009, according to the Global Property Guide research. Higher yields are realized from condominiums measuring between 45 and 80 sq. m., with yields of around 7%.
In Pattaya, foreigners are shifting from buying residences to renting, at monthly rentals ranging from THB 50,000 to THB 90,000, according to Clayton Wade of Premier Homes Real Estate. Demand for rentals in Pattaya grew strongly when the baht began strengthening against the US dollar.
In July 2010, the BOT raised its key interest rate to 1.5% after maintaining it at 1.25% since April 2009. The rate was further increased by 25 basis points to 1.75% in August, and to 2% in December.
There were concerns, however, about the BOT?s timing, given the weak economy in October. Baht appreciation may occur as interest differentials with the US widen, while higher costs will hit borrowers when banks follow the rates increase. However so far, the Government Housing Bank (GHB) interest rate has been constant since May 2009, at 6.75%.
The BOT explained that a negative real interest rate is inappropriate when the economy is expanding. With the key rate at 2% and inflation around 3.4%, the real interest rate is -1.4%, suggesting that further interest rate rises may occur.
The BOT has released new rules in response to public anxiety that Thailand faces the risk of another property bubble, particularly in the condominium sector.
The BOT?s new rules take effect in 2011 and 2012.
Risk weightings are used to calculate the minimum amount of capital required to support lending. The higher the risk, the greater capital is required by banks leading to increased overall costs in the form of higher interest rates.
In fact, a bubble is unlikely in the Thai property market as prices have risen naturally in the past three years, according to the Government Housing Bank (GHB), a state-owned lending agency. GHB?s president Khan Prachuabmoh insists that there is nothing unusual in the present situation, despite the substantial recent increases in low-end supply.
Real demand, not speculative demand, exists for low-rise housing below THB 3 million (USD99,100), which accounts for 70% of the market, according to Housing Business Association (HBA) president Issara Boonyong. The remaining 30% of demand comes from investors, who buy homes to generate rental income. The 23,000 registrations of new condo units in the first nine months of 2010, compares with 29,000 registrations of low-rise residences, adds Boonyong.
Demand for residential projects is expected to grow by at least 7% in 2011 despite the BOT?s measures to control the property sector, says Thongma Vijitphongpun, chief executive officer of Pruksa Real Estate.
The new rules are unlikely to affect demand, he adds, as down payments on residential projects are usually at least 10%. This is true for both condominiums and low-rise residences.
The low-rise residence market is expected to recover after the mass transit system expands to Bangkok?s neighboring provinces including Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani, according to deputy-governor Teerachon Manomaipibul of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
Demand for rental units in city condominiums continues to grow from both local and foreign tenants as returns are higher (6-10% per annum) compared to saving in a bank, since interest rates for saving deposits linger below 2%, according to Asian Property Development?s senior vice-president Poompat Sinacharoen.
Somewhat confirming this, the preliminary figures for personal housing credit in Q3 2010 stood at THB 1.058 trillion (USD35 billion), up by 14.7% y-o-y, according to the BOT. The strong growth may be due to the special mortgage campaign launched by the Siam Commercial Bank, the biggest mortgage lender in Thailand.
The campaign allows borrowers to pay monthly installments as low as THB 1,000 (USD33) in the first year for each THB 1 million (USD33,000) taken out, tied with a special interest rate of 1% during the period. The campaign was offered until the end of December 2010.
Outstanding mortgages were 11% percent of GDP in 2009, only a percentage point up from 2008.
After GDP growth of 7.8% in 2010 and a contraction of 2.3% in 2009, GDP expanded by a meager 0.065% during 2011, mainly due to the floods that hit the country in October.
In the second quarter of 2012, the country?s gross domestic product rose 4.2% from the same period last year. However due to the eurozone crisis, exports fell 4.2% during the year to June, the fourth decline in just six months.
Despite external uncertainty, the domestic economy is expected to grow by a robust 5.7%, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country?s central bank.
The Thai tourism industry, which makes up about 6.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), has already recovered. During the first eight months of 2012, the total number of international arrivals in the country increased 8.7% to 14.34 million, fuelled by arrivals from the Middle East, Oceania, South Asia and Africa, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).
The headline inflation is projected at 2.9% at between to 3.4% in 2012, according to National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).? The BOT kept its policy interest rate unchanged at 3% at its September 5 meeting, after cutting the rate twice last November 2011 and January 2012 to help business after the floods.

MILAN (AP) ? Sharon Stone helped raise more than $1.1 million (?846,000) for AIDS research at a charity auction, hours after a brief trip to a hospital during Milan Fashion Week.
The 54-year-old Stone experienced migraine-related symptoms after the Fendi runway show Saturday night, was examined as a precaution and was given a clean bill of health, the amfAR Foundation for AIDS Research said in a statement Sunday.
The foundation denied earlier reports that she had fainted.
At the charity auction Saturday night, Stone was in fine form, cracking jokes as she enticed higher bids.
"Wild horses couldn't keep her away," the foundation said.
Designer Roberto Cavalli paid ?35,000 ($45,500) for a new interpretation of the 1972 Bocca sofa shaped like lips after Stone reclined on the piece, demonstrating its comfort.
"You can kiss my a-- anytime," she joked with Cavalli, who was sitting at Stone's table.
A 2004 Damien Hirst etching of nine colored dots called "Quene 1-AM" netted ?110,000 ($143,000) while a Robert Rauschenberg print "Site" earned ?40,000 ($52,000).
The foundation said most of the money it raises is used for research toward finding a cure for AIDS.

State wildlife officials say the population of Canada geese appears to be increasing, even though Minnesota hunters killed more of the birds than any other waterfowl last year.
?? ?
The state Department of Natural Resources estimates there were 434,000 Canada geese in the state this spring. A St. Paul Pioneer Press report says the DNR's goal is to have a population of 250,000 Canada geese.
?? ?
Hunters have been out in force, but the Canada geese population continues to thrive. Federal figures say Minnesota hunters killed nearly 239,000 Canada geese last year. The DNR also issued a record 200 permits for farmers to kill geese out of season, up from 160 last year, resulting in as many as 1,500 geese being shot.
?? ?
Wildlife managers are considering changes to hunting policies that might help bring the population down further.

The more cynical among us would argue that allowing cellphones in-flight is only a guarantee of an even more unpleasant trip, at least for anyone wanting a distraction-free cabin. There must still be a few optimists: Boeing is promising that future production runs of the 747-8 and 777 will have the necessary support for in-flight cellphone use, live TV and internet access that comes through either headrest screens or WiFi. Aircraft with the upgrade should roll off the production lines before the end of 2013, and they'll be following a slight change to the 787 later this year that makes the technology support a common option. Some of us may wind up reaching for the earplugs in countries where regulators approve in-air wireless, but there's definite upsides for all but the biggest curmudgeons -- Boeing's moves could lead to more ubiquitous in-flight WiFi next year, on top of ready-made wireless media streaming due in 2014.

RESTON, Va., Sept. 20, 2012 ?/PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Stanley Martin, one of the nation's leading privately owned new home builders, announces today that the company sold 86 homes in July and August of 2012, representing a 91% increase over 2011 with 45 homes sold during the same period.?Stanley Martin has surpassed the 300 homes sold mark for this year ? a benchmark that wasn't met last year until November. This increase in sales is attributed to three core business strategies: land position, smart and efficient floorplans, and green building techniques.
Steve Alloy, Stanley Martin's President, explains the company's success:
"In recent years, our leadership team has made a number of strategic decisions that dramatically impact the way we build new homes and do business. When other homebuilders were buying land in the outskirts of the DC Metro Area, we decided to buy land closer to where the jobs are and in counties closer to the city.?We are now opening new home communities in Virginia and Maryland near where people work so they spend less time commuting and more time enjoying their homes.
Additionally, we introduced new flooplans with more efficient use of space on the inside and more curb appeal from the outside. Our customers appreciate the big kitchens, walk-in closets, and storage space that increase the usable square footage in all our townhomes and single-family homes.??
Lastly, we have become leaders in green building techniques resulting in our homes being 65% more energy efficient than typical re-sale homes."
Stanley Martin's true measure of success is customer satisfaction. GuildQuality, a third party vendor that survey's homebuyers 90 days after they have moved in, reports that 98% are satisfied with the quality and 95% would recommend Stanley Martin to a friend or relative.?

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit manager Jim Leyland had his head on a swivel, looking at reporters when they asked a question one moment and glancing up toward the TV in his office with Kansas City leading Chicago when it got quiet.
"If I didn't have this on, I might as well go home," Leyland said.
The Tigers improved their chances of sticking around beyond the regular season when Miguel Cabrera homered, Omar Infante drove in three runs and Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings to help them beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Wednesday night.
The Royals later helped out with a 3-0 win over the White Sox that trimmed their lead to two games over Detroit in the AL Central with 14 games remaining.
The Tigers have won two straight over the A's - and 28 of their last 36 games at home.
"We played a couple good games against one of the hottest teams in all of baseball," Leyland said. "That's pretty good."
Oakland, clinging to an AL wild-card spot, has dropped three straight and might have had a costly loss on the mound because Brett Anderson (4-2) left the game after two-plus innings with a strained right oblique.
"He's getting an MRI right now," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "So, we won't know anything until he gets back."
Melvin plans to pitch Dan Strally in Anderson's spot in the rotation if he can't make his next start.
The A's forced Justin Verlander (15-8) to throw 122 pitches and that ended his night. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five.
"It was a grind," Verlander said.
Octavio Dotel struck out two in a perfect seventh. Joaquin Benoit had two strikeouts in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game in a non-save situation, entering with a six-run lead, and was booed after giving up two-out RBI singles to Cliff Pennington and Stephen Drew.
Detroit played some small ball to take a 3-0 lead in the third.
Andy Dirks and Gerald Laird started the inning with bunt singles and advanced on Austin Jackson's groundout. Infante followed with a double down the left-field line to put the Tigers up 2-0.
"Those were two perfect bunts or they would have been outs," Melvin said.
Infante's groundout in the eighth inning gave the Tigers a six-run lead.
After walking Cabrera intentionally and giving Prince Fielder a free pass on four pitches to load the bases, Anderson was injured while pitching to Delmon Young. Anderson fell forward and landed awkwardly after throwing his 48th pitch. Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta and Melvin talked with Anderson briefly on the field before deciding to take him out of the game.
"We could see earlier in the inning that he was trying to stretch out his back, so I don't think the fall had anything to do with it," Melvin said. "We just checked him at that point and decided we didn't want to go any farther with him."
Right-hander Pat Neshek replaced Anderson and Young promptly hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta had an error in the fifth - snapping a 75-game errorless streak - but he helped turn a double play to end the inning. He chipped in at the plate in the home half, hitting an RBI single to put Detroit ahead 4-0.
Cabrera sent Jim Miller's 94 mph high fastball on an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for his 41st home run and 130th RBI to bolster his shot at being baseball's first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the feat in 1967.
"It's something that is a dream," Cabrera said. "But right now, I got to focus on trying to help us make the playoffs."
Verlander said it has been "unbelievable," to watch Cabrera this season.
"Obviously, he's got my support for MVP," the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young award winner. "He's one home run away from the Triple Crown, and that's a rarity in baseball, and that's a testament to how good of a player he is.
"Look at the ball he hit for a home run. We were talking about that, you just don't see that. You execute your pitch, 94 up at his chin, and he hits a home run.
NOTES: Tigers RHP Max Scherzer hopes to make his next scheduled start on Sunday at home against Minnesota. He left the series opener against Oakland after just two innings because of a fatigued right shoulder. "It wasn't sharp pain, it was weakness," he said. "I need a couple days of not throwing." ... A's OF Coco Crisp didn't play because of infections in both eyes and Melvin is hoping his contagious ailment doesn't spread. "He's got his own towels," Melvin said. ... Tigers C Alex Avila, still feeling the effects of colliding with Fielder on Sunday, didn't play and the team is hoping he'll return this weekend at home against the Twins. ... Peralta's 75-game scoreless streak was the longest by a position player for the Tigers in a season since at least 1957.

SEATTLE (AP) - Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning and the Baltimore Orioles won their 15th straight extra-innings game with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.
