Kanye West, Kim Kardashian expecting 1st child

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? A kid for Kimye: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their first child.

The rapper announced at a concert Sunday night that his girlfriend is pregnant. He told the crowd of more than 5,000 at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall in song form: "Now you having my baby."

The crowd roared.

Most of the Kardashian clan tweeted about the news, including Kim's sisters and mother. Kourtney Kardashian wrote: "Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"

West also told concertgoers to congratulate his "baby mom" and that this was the "most amazing thing."

Representatives for West and Kardashian didn't immediately respond to emails about the pregnancy.

The rapper and reality TV star went public in March.

Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries in August 2011 and their divorce is not finalized.

West's Sunday night show was his third consecutive performance at Revel. He took the stage for nearly two hours, performing hits like "Good Life," ''Jesus Walks" and "Clique" in an all-white ensemble with two band mates.

Is Your Business Online? Learn The Tips To Successful Internet ...

Share

Internet marketing is incredibly interesting. The possibilities are endless when it comes to all the different ways it might be customized to meet a business need. However, this can confuse someone who is new to the process as it can be overwhelming when first starting out. This list of tips can prepare you for the challenge.

Include Facebook and Twitter in your Internet promotion plan. News media, such as social websites, allow you to keep up-to-date and in constant communication with all your site?s visitors, and simple and quick when trying to keep them informed about any promotions. Yet you should exercise restraint and not overdo it with promotional tweets and remarks. Rather, provide posts that are informative and witty, with a little bit of sales lingo scattered here and there.

TIP! Consistent blogging is a productive way to enhance any online marketing venture. Blogging allows you a forum in which your customers can be informed about various products.

Consider using a web host that allows you to save all your emails and helps you organize your customer data. Do your best to keep them protected. Therefore, stay away from free email services which deletes old messages, because access to these messages can be very important. If you have sensitive information contained in your emails, consider security and archiving methods to keep them safe.

Provide a freebie to visitors of your website. One easy freebie to offer is an article specifically geared toward your business. Or, offer printable coupons, special offers or discounts for future services. People will perceive you as knowledgeable and helpful if you offer free quality content.

Content is the root and foundation of a successful marketing strategy. Make sure that the content on your website is up-to-date so that you can stay current. In addition, make sure that someone looks over your content. A second set of eyes can give you valuable insight into the effectiveness of your message. Don?t forget to check your grammar and spelling to make sure that there aren?t any mistakes.

TIP! If you give your customers an extra freebie if they refer friends, they may be more likely to sign up. When customers refer others to your site, you can easily multiply the number of visitors your site receives.

You may be able to enhance your website?s appeal by doing some research on psychology studies that analyze how the design of a web page and the use of Online marketing elements influence a person?s opinion of the site. Psychological aspects can immensely effect how someone views your brand, established by the theme, outlay and color of your website. Taking advantage of these subtleties can help you earn the most profits possible.

A good way to get your contact list built up is by using a squeeze page. This encourages your site visitors to offer up their email address. The things you can offer here are endless. You could offer up a free eBook, some type of other informational product, a discount on a future purchase, etc. This service will help both you and the visitor.

Determine who it is you are attempting to reach, then understand what content will best attract these visitors to your site. When you have a firm grasp of who you want visiting your site and what they are likely to expect, it will be a snap to develop enticing, highly-appreciated content.

TIP! Always address complaints from customers personally. You may want to get some outside help, but you will do better to handle customer service yourself.

There are a lot of methods to do Internet promotion. That is a curse, but also can be a gift. Start with proven techniques while gradually testing new innovations. The tips found here, though, hopefully have helped you make the choices a bit easier.

New era of eBook dominance has begun | Industry Leaders Magazine

Era of e-book dominance has begun

Era of e-book dominance has begun

Is the centuries-old publishing business going to disappear for good? Probably not? But the latest survey shows that certainly a new era of e-book dominance has begun. And all this is because of fascination with digital tablets which are a main driver of a fundamental change in how Americans and also other nations read books. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, e-book reading is growing at unexpectedly fast rate.

eBooks? appealing magic

The survey shows that the share of Americans age 16 and older who read e-books climbed to about 23 percent from nearly 16 percent a year ago. In addition, the number of people who read printed books decreased to approximately 67 percent from roughly 72 percent in 2011.

Researchers are convinced that the spectacular change in reading habits was introduced by the growing popularity of tablets and e-reader devices. Not unexpectedly, the findings of the survey indicate that e-book readers are also owners of an e-reading device such as a tablet computer or e-reader. Approximately one-third of Americans ages 16 and older own at least one of the aforementioned devices.

The findings of the survey also indicate that there are three main groups of e-book readers:

  • People with college and graduate degrees
  • People living in households earning over $75,000
  • People in age range from 30 and 49

Even though the number of people aware that libraries offer e-books grew to approximately 31 percent from roughly 24 percent in 2011, libraries might be in trouble as the share of people borrowing e-books from them only increased to 5 percent from just 3 percent a year ago.

With the increasing popularity of tablets, including the Apple Inc.?s iPad, people want to have them and use them. Other companies such as Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. also try to take advantage of growing demand for e-book devices, thereby introducing their own products. And to have their own piece of pie, they launched lower-priced products including the Google Nexus Tablet and Amazon?s Kindle Fire.?Certainly the introduction of less costly e-book devices had a significant impact on the growth of e-book readers. According to IDC, a technology research firm, projected that tablet sales would grow to over 122 million in 2012.

Future of printed books

One may ask: ?So does it mean that printed books are going to fade away?? Certainly printed books will not disappear as they are better gifts than e-books, that is for sure. But everything indicates that these days we are witnessing some kind of revolution which is taking us into the future world of e/books.? Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, underlined the significance of the ongoing revolutionary change in the book environment, adding that the shift would also introduce a social transition as well.

But the visible change in the book experience also has an impact on the economics of book publishing businesses. For example,?Barnes & Noble Inc., a U.S. book retailer, is struggling to adjust to the new digital world. Bertelsmann SE & Co. and Pearson Plc have been negotiating on a merger of their publishing divisions as they believe that the merged entity would have a better chance to cope with all challenges of the contemporary world.

Currently publishers are facing many problems as they are trying to adapt to new conditions. The transition is not that simple as e-book sales are dominated by Amazon.com Inc. This change in the world of books cannot be stopped, yet many companies need to learn how to play the new game. And even though it is certain that one day e-books will become dominant, printed books will surely not disappear. At least some hope so.

Egypt reviews ballot on contentious constitution

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian judges were investigating opposition accusations of voting fraud on Monday before declaring the result of a referendum set to show that a contentious new constitution has been approved.

President Mohamed Mursi sees the basic law, drawn up mostly by his Islamist allies, as a vital step in Egypt's transition to democracy almost two years after the fall of military-backed strongman Hosni Mubarak.

Unofficial tallies from the Muslim Brotherhood - which catapulted Mursi into the presidency this year - indicated that 64 percent had approved the charter, although an official result was not expected until at least Tuesday. An opposition tally had a similar result.

Mursi's critics said the vote, conducted in two stages in a process that ended on Saturday, had been marred by a litany of irregularities, and have demanded a full inquiry.

"The committee is currently compiling results from the first and second phase and votes from Egyptians abroad, and is investigating complaints," Judge Mahmoud Abu Shousha, a member of the committee, told Reuters.

Two sources in the committee said the results were likely to be announced on Tuesday. "It will not be very different from the unofficial result, at 60-something percent," one said.

The opposition, a loose alliance of socialists, liberal-minded Muslims and Christians, say the text is too Islamist, ignores the rights of minorities and represents a recipe for more trouble in the most populous Arab nation. They have noted that less than a third of those eligible turned out to vote.

ELECTION LOOMS

If the "yes" vote is confirmed, a parliamentary election will follow in about two months, setting the stage for Islamists to renew their battle with more secular-minded opponents.

Opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel peace prize winner, urged Mursi to form an all-inclusive government together with the liberal camp in order to patch up divisions and steer Egypt out of trouble in a democratic way.

"I am ready to join hands with President Mursi on condition that he forms a national (unity) government and speaks as president for all Egyptians," he told the daily Al-Shorouk.

ElBaradei, the former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, said a new assembly should rewrite the draft - a call unlikely to be heeded by Mursi, who is keen to push it through quickly.

By forcing the pace on the constitution, Mursi risks squandering the opportunity to build consensus for the austerity measures desperately needed to kick-start an ailing economy, economists say.

Highlighting investor concerns, Standard and Poor's cut Egypt's long-term credit rating and said another cut was possible if political turbulence worsened.

Responding to what it said were market rumors, the central bank said it was taking steps to safeguard bank deposits.

Some Egyptians say they have withdrawn their funds from banks out of concern that they will be frozen by authorities.

LEGISLATIVE POWERS

Under the new constitution, legislative powers that have been temporarily held by Mursi move to the Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament until a new lower house is elected.

The make-up of the Supreme Constitutional Court, which Islamists say is filled with Mubarak-era appointees bent on throwing up legal challenges to Mursi's rule, will also change as its membership is cut to 11 from 18.

Those expected to leave include Tahani al-Gebali, who has described Mursi as an "illegitimate president".

The low turnout has prompted some newspapers to question how much support the charter really had, with opponents saying Mursi lost the vote in much of the capital.

"The referendum battle has ended, and the war over the constitution's legitimacy has begun," Al-Shorouk wrote in a headline, while a headline in the Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper read: "Constitution of the minority".

The head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Saad al-Katatni, wrote on Facebook that the group's members were "extending our hands to all political parties and all national forces", adding: "We will all start a new page".

But the opposition National Salvation Front say the new basic law only deepens a rift between the liberals and Islamists who combined to overthrow Mubarak, and that they will keep challenging it through protests and other democratic means.

"We do not consider this constitution legitimate," liberal politician Amr Hamzawy said on Sunday, arguing that it violated personal freedoms.

The run-up to the referendum was marred by protests triggered by Mursi's decision to award himself broad powers on November 22. At least eight people were killed in clashes in Cairo and violence also flared in the second city, Alexandria.

Sibling squabbles can lead to depression, anxiety

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Holiday presents will soon be under the tree for millions of adolescents. With those gifts may come sibling squabbles over violations of personal space, such as unwanted borrowing of a fashionable clothing item, or arguments over fairness, such as whose turn it is to play a new video game. Those squabbles represent two specific types of sibling conflict that can have different effects on a youth's emotional health, according to a multi-year study by a University of Missouri psychologist. With these findings, parents can learn how to bring peace to the home and encourage their children's healthy psychological development.

"Our results show that conflicts about violations of personal space and property are associated with greater anxiety and lower self-esteem one year later in life," said Nicole Campione-Barr, MU assistant professor of psychological science in the College of Arts and Science. "Conflicts over issues of equality and fairness are correlated to greater depression one year later."

Campione-Barr and her colleagues studied 145 pairs of mostly European-American, middle-class siblings for one year. The average ages for the pairs were 15 and 12 years. The teens rated different topics of possible conflict, noting the frequency and intensity of the arguments. The arguments were organized into two categories: violations of personal domain or conflicts over fairness and equality. The study then examined correlations among the arguments and teens' reports of depressed mood, anxiety and self-esteem after one year.

"Although parents may be inclined to step in as arbiters, previous research has found that parents' interventions into adolescent sibling conflict can be detrimental," said Campione-Barr. "In concert with those prior findings, we believe our research suggests that setting household rules such as 'knock before entering a sibling's room,' can be the best means for parents to resolve disputes and avoid appearing to play favorites. A calendar of chores and defined time limits for turns with a video game can help reduce conflicts over fairness. However, if a parent notes that one child consistently gets the short end of the stick, action should be taken to ensure one child isn't being too subordinate. Also, if most sibling interactions become intense conflicts, a family should seek professional help, especially if violence is involved."

Campione-Barr noted that one limitation to her study was that it was largely constrained in its demographic scope to white, middle-class Americans. Other cultures and economic classes may have different relationships among privacy, fairness and emotional well-being. Although adolescents in some households may not have their own rooms, they still need some degree of respect for personal space from both parents and siblings. For example, parents and siblings should respect the private nature of children's diaries.

"The next step in our research will be to examine the positive aspects of relationships among adolescent siblings and parents," said Campione-Barr. "Strong, healthy family relationships are immensely beneficial later in life. For example, there are things people will tell their siblings that they would never tell their parents, or possibly even friends. We are currently studying disclosure and levels of trust among parents, siblings and peers."

The study, "Differential associations between domains of sibling conflict and adolescent emotional adjustment," was published in the journal Child Development.

Afghan tycoons fear banks help kidnap gangs

Mohammad Shoib / Reuters

A businessman travels with his personal security personnel in Afghanistan's Herat province on Dec. 11.

By Reuters

KABUL -- Afghan construction magnate Haji Asadullah Ghaznawi was dragged from his office with a gun to his head and locked up in a slaughterhouse for almost three weeks.

Ghaznawi was later shocked to discover someone had leaked details of his bank account to the kidnap gang who pulled up in a car in broad daylight in Kabul a year ago and abducted him.

Violent criminals who gain access to confidential information about Afghan millionaires like Ghaznawi have raised alarming questions about the dangers of doing business in one of the world's poorest and most corrupt countries.

"Eight days before I was kidnapped a business partner added one million dollars to my bank account," Ghaznawi said from his luxurious office in the Afghan capital.

"The kidnappers told me that I had $1 million in my bank. How could they know this?," he asked.

The leaks, some businessmen allege, are coming from the very people who are supposed to be protecting Afghans and helping them prosper -- intelligence officials, police and bankers.

Safeguarding Afghanistan's economy is just as important for the troubled South Asian country?s stability as containing the Taliban-led insurgency as NATO combat troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

Wealthy Afghans fearful of a new civil war or a Taliban push to seize power have already been sending vast sums of money to banks in the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai and elsewhere, prompting authorities to impose measures to try and stem the flow.

Government officials fear bank account scams and kidnappings could accelerate that process, and potentially bring the fledgling economy to its knees.

Purchased freedom
Ghaznawi spent 17 days in the basement slaughterhouse, worried about his safety and also troubled that criminals now know exactly how much he is worth. A business partner bought his freedom for $820,000.

It is a problem that has Afghan entrepreneurs so worried that many are hiring large teams of armed guards to provide around-the-clock protection.

Afghanistan's banking sector has seen an influx of cash from foreign aid and steady growth in industry and construction, but it remains weak and open to exploitation by criminals.

Businessmen and top officials from the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry say bank employees are leaking account balances to sophisticated gangs who arrange kidnappings.

More news about South and Central Asia on NBCNews.com

"These kidnap gangs have some good connections, they work as teams, they know who the rich people are," said Shir Baz Kaminzada, president of the Afghan Industrial Union, who runs a lucrative printing and packaging firm and travels in a bullet-proof car.

"Our banks aren't so secure and some bank people, we suspect they're providing information to criminals," he said.

Some businessmen go further and allege rogue officials from Afghanistan's intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, are obtaining the financial records of high-rollers. The agency did not respond to interview requests.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

UN calls for Afghanistan to protect women from rape, forced marriage

Lucrative business
Kidnapping is a lucrative business, with ransoms often in excess of $1 million. Many cases go unreported and most are unsolved.

"Among our members, we have many kidnap victims and the problem is mostly solved by paying the ransom without involving police," said Ahmad Tawfiq Dawari, a deputy head at the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Facebook takes down Taliban recruiter page

"They hire 10-15 private guards themselves and it's expensive. When security forces do nothing to stop the kidnappers, how can we trust them to protect us?" he asked.

Businessmen place the blame squarely on law enforcement agencies. The chief of the Kabul Criminal Investigation, Mohammad Zahir, insists police are cracking down on the gangs and says the leaks most likely came from employees or relatives.

Kevin Frayer / AP

In southern Afghanistan, the focus of the U.S. war effort, nearly all the Afghan soldiers are foreigners too. Photographer Kevin Frayer shows these soldiers in a series of portraits.

"These kidnappers had private prisons where they tortured victims if they refused to pay, so we started a fight against them and we've brought this problem to its lowest point," Zahir said, reeling off the names of prominent people rescued and kidnapping kingpins who have been arrested.

Complete World coverage on NBCNews.com

"The government supports us and we're not afraid of anyone," he added.

Sitting with an associate in his Kabul office, Ghaznawi gets little comfort from such talk and believes businessmen have a bleak future in Afghanistan. He constantly fears that the kidnappers will return.

"I wanted to shut down my business but my partners convinced me to continue," he said. "Other businessmen know what I went through, why would they put their money and lives at risk?"

cbc news: Efficient Storage Solutions Using Your Garage | Home ...

    cheap storage

    have cheap storage in garage

Are you opting for a cheap storage space for storing your frequently used articles? Quite often you may think of buying a new cupboard or box. An effective storage solution which does not require a whole lot of investment in terms of time and money is actually possible if you have a garage with ample space. Of course, you need to put in some effort to clean and arrange the garage for storing purposes.

When you are making use of your garage as a place for cheap storage, there are mainly two advantages.? The first one is that you get good storage space out of less investment, and the second is that you simply get an excuse to keep your garage neat and tidy. More often than not, you would have always longed for a garage which is well arranged, but never got around to getting it done for the lack of time and motivation. Once you have decided to make use of the space in the garage, you would automatically prepare a simple plan to arrange the things in it. You may have several items to be stored in the garage such as tools, seasonal sports equipments and miscellaneous gears etc.

    Inexpensively storing your stuff

    storage solutions using your garage

obtain good storage out of your garage

Always make a list of the inventory. Sometimes there are many things thrown carelessly on the garage floor. You need to sift through the pile and get rid of the items that you no longer need. Now you may end up with what actually you have to store in the garage. Usually there is a belief that storing all these stuff will be very costly as you have to buy a complete garage storage system which is capable of keeping motor cycle parts to boat parts. But this is not true because most people do not need such large storage units.

One good method is storing your stuff in cabinets. It does not mean that you need to buy new and fancy garage cabinets. You can use old kitchen cabinets for this purpose. If you don?t have such an old cabinet then you will find them at garage sales, thrift stores or in auctions. May be one of your friends has a few to spare. Usually used kitchen cabinets will have some wear and tear and you can obtain them at pretty reasonable price.

Now arrange your garage and get yourself an affordable storing option!

    Reavers

Appearance: Mostly human, skin varies from black to ash gray. Often they are covered in various sores and wear layers of clothing, usually with hoods or some form of a head wrap. Their fingers are extremely slender and nails are curved like talons. Their mouths are full of pointed teeth and they may unhinge their jaws at will. They move extremely fast when chasing prey.

What they are: Reavers are the end result of the mutated chemical strain from the original event. They have evolved over time, but their cores remain the same. They must eat living flesh, but there doesn't seem to be a limitation on how long they can go between feedings. They are highly intelligence, but riddled with madness. Occasionally, they will have bouts of clarity, and this is when the Reavers are truly dangerous. They are not dead, or the walking undead. They live and die like other races. They age like humans, with a shorter lifespan. Most Reavers die before reaching age fifty, but they keep their numbers up by turning any of the young humans they come across. Their bite is infectious and the bitten will turn in a matter of hours, sometimes days if their resistance is high.

Appearance: Closely resemble humans, but with a bloodless complexion. Limbs are very slender, with bones more prominent the longer one has gone without eating. The Bogles that haven't eaten for a very long time appear to be little more than walking skeletons, hunched forward in pain. They are slow moving and make guttural noises.

What they are: Bogles are another variant strain that have mutated from the original event. They are much more stable than the Reavers and not dangerous unless provoked. They must eat dead flesh, but like the Reavers, seem capable of going a very long time between feedings. However, Bogles suffer pain that grows increasingly strong if they go for longer than a week without a meal. They have intelligence, as they will often attempt indirectly cause the demise of their live prey. They also tend to obsessive once they have located a preferred meal, and will stalk their prey until something else draws their attention, or their target dies. Bogles do not sleep, and they do not need to drink. They also age, typically dying before they reach sixty-five. However, they are more susceptible to attacks by other beings, as they do not initiate conflict, but wait for the first attack to be made on them. Their bites are not infectious.

    Gooding & Company Scottsdale Auctions

?We always look forward to January because Scottsdale automotive auction week is a dynamic and?significant marketplace for our business as well as the collector car industry as a whole,? says David?Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company. ?With our latest additions, such as this earlyseries Ferrari long wheelbase California Spider and Porsche RSK, we anticipate an exciting return after a?record-setting 2012 season.?

These four exceptional collector cars will join a wide variety of collectibles, such as the 1957 Maserati?150 GT Spider prototype, 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster?and 2003 Ferrari Enzo, to round out?Gooding & Company?s robust catalogue that will be offered over two auction days during the annual?Arizona automotive auction week. At last year?s Scottsdale Auctions, Gooding & Company sold 116 out?of 118 cars realizing $39.8 million in gross sales with 98% sold and 13 world records.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider

1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider

An early Scaglietti-coachbuilt example of one of Ferrari?s most iconic open sports cars, this?extraordinary, matching-numbers California Spider is the 13th of 50 built and features coachwork with?rare, covered headlights. The car was delivered new to Ferrari Representatives of California and has been?cared for by only three owners in the past four decades. Following its spectacular and complete?restoration by Dennison International in 2012, this car received tremendous praise and near-perfect scores?at both the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance and Ferrari Club of America Meet, where it took home a?Platinum trophy. Most importantly, this rare Ferrari was certified by the Ferrari Classiche department,?confirming it as an authentic, matching-numbers example. Dazzling in metallic midnight blue over rich,?tan leather interior, this California Spider?s estimate is $5,500,000 ? $7,000,000.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale

    1959 Porsche RSK

One of Porsche?s most significant and beautifully-designed, open race cars, the RSK evolved from the?marque?s highly-successful 550 Spyder series. The RSK racing program served Porsche well in the late?1950s, repeatedly seizing class wins at Le Mans, Targa Florio, and the European Hill Climb?Championship. One of 37 built, this RSK was delivered new to the Miami-based sports car enthusiast?Roy Schechter, who first raced the car that same year in Cuba at the 4 Hours of Alamar where it finished?in fourth place. From that point on, this extraordinary, privateer racer was positioned for greatness. At the?Courtland Sports Car Races, Schechter and his RSK took home a significant overall win, beating both Jim?Hall?s Maserati 450 S and E.D. Martin?s Ferrari Monza. Soon after, the RSK participated in the Nassau?Speed Week in the Bahamas, racing in the Governor?s Trophy, Porsche Trophy and the Nassau Trophy.?Since its retirement in 1960, it has been restored and inspected by Porsche Historian J?rgen Barth, who?appreciated its rare, overall originality, early racing history, and matching-numbers engine. A rarity?indeed, the RSK?s estimate is $2,800,000 ? $3,200,000.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale

Formerly part of the sensational Greg Garrison collection, this one-off Ferrari is one of the most?significant one-off 250 GTs by Pinin Farina. This car debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1959 and was?positioned near a 410 Superamerica coupe as well as two standard 250 GTs, a telling display that?showcased Pinin Farina?s innovative blend of design cues from both models to create this 250 GT Coupe?Speciale. Clear design details that make this car unique from a standard Pinin Farina Coupe include a?large wraparound rear window with rear quarter windows, slim pillars, and body flanks creating elegant?lines running from the front to rear wheels. Recently restored by noted marque expert Bob Smith?Coachworks, this one-off show car has won major awards at Pebble Beach and Cavallino Classic. With?beautiful and sporting style in metallic silver over black leather interior, this one-of-a-kind Ferrari is an?important piece of Ferrari?s design history and an ideal Concours entrant. Its estimate is $1,700,000 -?$2,100,000.

1930 Ford Model A Sport Phaeton

1930 Ford Model A Sport Phaeton

A true connoisseur, Edsel Ford may be best remembered for his influential vision of bringing continental?art and design to American automotive manufacturing. In 1929, as President of Ford Motor Company, he?commissioned LeBaron to design a one-of-a-kind body for the new Model A chassis, an experimental?project that married the mass-produced Ford car to bespoke style and luxury. This resulted in one of the?most attractive, pre-war Fords ever made: a one-off luxurious custom and elegantly-sculptured dual-cowl?sport phaeton for Edsel?s personal use and taste. The car?s extraordinary specifications include exclusive,?French Stephen Grebel headlamps, a center-mounted Klaxon horn, exposed chrome detailing, and patent?leather splash aprons. In the 1950s, this car was sold to the well-known antique car collector Vernon?Jarvis, who stored it in an Illinois dairy barn where it remained for more than 50 years. The car was?discovered surprisingly in the dilapidated barn in 2007 and has since been restored to the highest concours?standards. Edsel Ford?s spectacular, LeBaron-bodied, bespoke Model A will make its first public?appearance since restoration at the Scottsdale Auctions in January and will be offered with an extensive?file of original documentation, photography, period magazine articles and Edsel?s Michigan registration.?Its estimate is $325,000 ? $400,000.

Direct Mailers Take Note: January Effective Date for New Tabbing ...

If you send folded marketing mail that's not in an envelope, then you need to get up to speed quickly on the new tabbing regulations from the USPS that take effect on Saturday, January 5th, 2013.

These new USPS rules will require you to pay attention to a variety of factors including:

    • the location of your tabs
    • the size of your tabs
    • the weight of your mailer
    • the required number of tabs
    • the thickness of the paper that you use
    • the orientation of the fold
    • inclusion of a staple

Raise your hand if you like more rules. Of course you don't but, the USPS has indicated that their rationale for these stricter rules is to assure that your mail piece actually makes it through the mail without being destroyed.

Let's face it, there's not much point in investing money in direct mail marketing if there's a good chance that your piece won't make it through the mail, so I have to admit that the rationale behind these changes does make sense.

Everyone sees USPS employees out delivering the mail, but what most people don't realize is the complex and expensive sorting equipment that the USPS uses to route the mail to the correct location. It's these pieces of equipment that "eats" tabbed mail that is not prepared based on these new guidelines.

New rules apply to letter-sized pieces only: Before reading further, you should know that these new regulations will only apply to letter-sized mail pieces. We're talking about pieces of mail that measure 6" x 11" or smaller when dropped into the mail-stream.

In my experience, the most common example of a self-mailer is the typical nonprofit newsletter, that gets folded down to 8.5? x 5.5? and mailed without an envelope.

Here are a few things that will disqualify your mailer right away:

    • self-mailers that use only 1 tab
    • using tabs at the bottom of your mailer
    • using perforated tabs
    • self-mailers with a gate-fold
    • paper that is too thin

Letter size bulk mail should always be designed so that it folds at the bottom and tabs at the top.

How thick does my paper have to be? Standard copy paper won't cut it anymore for self-mailers. The minimum paper thickness is either 28# bond or 70# text weight paper. Self-mailers printed on paper thinner than this will not be accepted by the USPS.

If you're mailing a document that uses more than 1 sheet of paper (for instance a newsletter), then the thickness requirement only applies to the outermost sheet of paper.

How many tabs do I need? All letter-sized bulk mail pieces will require at least 2 tabs, and in some cases 3 tabs. Self-mailers, like the sample below with just one tab placed in the center will be rejected.

    1TabCenter
Does the location of the tab matter? Yes, the location of the tab is critical! The edge of all tabs must be within 1" of the corner. Please carefully review the samples below. The top sample would be rejected by the USPS; however the bottom sample would be acceptable.

    2tabNo
    2tabsYtop
In addition, to being placed along the top of the mailer, tabs may instead be placed along the sides. In this scenario, the edge of the tabs must still be within 1" of the corner.? The samples below shows an acceptable example of tabs used on the side; notice the tab is within 1" of the corner.

    2tabsYside
Is your self-mailer stapled? Anything with a stitch or staple is considered a booklet. All letter-sized booklets will require 3 tabs. Said another way, anything that includes a staple must use 3 tabs.

The location of the third tab is important because the USPS equipment grabs your mail piece from the bottom right hand side, so they want the third tab to be on the bottom right hand side. As with the other tabs, the far edge of the tab needs to be within 1" of the edge.

The photos below show two examples of?approved tabbing for booklets/stapled mailers.

    3tabsy

    3tabsyside
How many pages can I include in my self-mailer? If you have several pages, and opt not to staple, you are limited to how many pages you can use based on how you fold your self-mailer:

    • unstapled, bi-folded mailers are limited to six 8.5" x 11" sheets (or three 11" x 17" sheets)
    • unstapled, tri-folded mailers are limited to four 8.5" x 11" sheets (or two 11" x 17" sheets)

For letter-sized, stapled self-mailers, your mail piece can weigh a maximum of 3 ounces and must be less than 0.25" thick. Remember, stitched mailers require a third tab placed 1" from the bottom right hand corner.

What about tri-folded mailers? In terms of tabs, the same requirements apply for tri-folded, self-mailers, but the requirements are even more specific. The center panel must be used for printing the address, and the final fold must fold up in the back. If you're having a hard time picturing this, just remember that self-mailers must tab from the top, and tri-folded mailers must have their address printed in the center panel.

How much does your mailer weigh? If your mail piece ways more than an ounce, you will be required to use tabs that measure at least 1.5" across, most standard tabs, and all the tabs pictured in the photos included in this article measure 1".

Other considerations: In lieu of tabs, glue dots may be used. The glue dots need to be a minimum of 3/8" thick and need to follow the same guidelines as tabs in terms of distance from the edge, and number of required glue dots.

Plan ahead to avoid issues with your next bulk mailing. If you're unsure, it's always a good idea to stop by your local Bulk Mail Unit with a sample. Ask for feedback on your sample piece, before you design and print all pieces.

What should I do if I already printed my mail piece and I'm stuck? If your mail piece is already printed and the paper is too thin, or it's designed to fold incorrectly, you can always just mail it in an envelope.

If your mail piece is printed on a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet, it will fit nicely in a standard 6" x 9" envelope and still qualify to mail at the letter rate. In the worst case scenario, if your addresses are already printed too, you may be able to use a 6" x 9" giant window envelope like the sample pictured below.
